At the end of September in 33 NATURA 2000 "Sakar" local producers, environmentalists and
friends of nature from Bulgaria and Turkey will meet!
The event is part of the international celebrations on the occasion of the day of the European
Green Belt, which is annually celebrated in number of countries in the period 18-24September. Green Balkans traditionally hosts the celebrations in the Sakar area, which is
one of the iconic border areas, part of the Green Belt.
Due to limited access in the past, a high level of biological diversity, characteristic
landscapes, way of life and culture have been preserved here.
By presenting traditional homemade products, participants in the event will learn about the
benefits that Sakar and the region provide to its residents and guests. At the same time, they
will have the opportunity to view an outdoor exhibition in Environmental Centre of the Green
Balkans in the village of Levka. The center is dedicated to traditional agricultural practices,
the grazing of domestic animals and the partnerships between farmers and conservationists,
with the purpose of the protection of rare and protected species and is part of the initiative
"Green Farmer" of the project team of "Life for the Lesser Kestrel" LIFE19 NAT/BG/001017,
implemented by LIFE Programe of the EU on the Green Balkans. This is the second event
that the Green Balkans team has organized, after friends and partners working in the area
met again in 2022 in Sakar.
Green Belt Day: aims to promote the international initiative - European Green Belt -
. It covers the cross-border territories of a number of
countries, which in the recent past fell on both sides of the former "Iron Curtain" dividing
Europe into two warring blocs. The border that divided the continent into East and West and
limited access to the area, which resulted from this, have helped to preserve exceptional
biodiversity and culture in these territories. Today, these territories are united in the
European Green Belt initiative and forms a 12,500 km long pan-European ecological corridor
along the former Iron Curtain from the Barents Sea in the north to the Mediterranean south
of Europe and the Black Sea coast, harboring exceptional biodiversity. The Balkan Green
Belt covers the southern part of the European Green Belt, which extends over the territory of 9 countries.
