On 15 June we made a presentation outdoors with the 6th grade students from “Rayna Knyagina” Primary School together with their biology teacher – Monika Teneva.

The event took place on the north side of the Maritsa River where Green Balkans team prepared a field scope and binoculars. In this way, the students easily and up close managed to observe mallards and Little Egrets. Of course, there were interesting species such as the Eurasian Wigeons. After the practical observation of the birds, we told the students about rarer species like the Pygmy Cormorants as well as other waterfowl that aren’t native for Maritsa River such as the Red-breasted Goose. For this purpose we brought the realistic model of Brent the Red-breasted Goose. We spoke about the unique habitats which Maritsa River offers. Due to these facts, the river is part of Natura 2000 ecological network.

After thе event ended, we returned in the classroom, but it wasn’t an ordinary one. It was in their STEM cabinet where we checked their knowledge of the animal species living near the Maritsa River. Mrs Teneva has prepared information with a description and photos of the species, while the students needed to put together the correct pairs.

Finally, the students received book dividers of the protected species and postcards of the Pygmy Cormorant as a gift for their knowledge and to celebrate the final day at school for this school year.

We would like to thank our hosts for the kind hospitality! We are looking forward to seeing you again!

Additional information:
Natura 2000

Natura 2000 is the largest coordinated network for nature conservation. More than 30% of the territory of Bulgaria falls within the scope of the network - 120 areas for the protection of wild birds and 234 areas for the protection of natural habitats.

Red-breasted Goose
The Red-breasted Goose is a globally endangered species, protected within the Natura 2000 ecological network. Bulgaria is an important country for the protection of the species - almost the entire world population spends the winter in the region of Primorska Dobrudzha.

Pigmy Cormorant
With only a few nesting sites in the country, the Pigmy Cormorant is one of the three species of cormorants found in Bulgaria. The species is closely associated with ponds and nests in colonies, making it vulnerable to disturbance. One of the most endangered species, which is why it is strictly protected by the Natura 2000 ecological network.

Bats
33 from the 35 species of bats in Europe can be found in Bulgaria. They are of key importance for ecosystems. All bat species are protected by the Biodiversity Act, and the forest and underground habitats of the species are protected within the Natura 2000 ecological network.
