Thanks to our good partnership with the Vrachanski Balkan Nature Park, the Birds of Prey Protection Society and the Municipality of Vratsa we celebrated the Natura 2000 Day in Vratsa together with the team of “Natura 2000 in Bulgaria- New Horizons” and “The bright future for the Black Vulture”.

The sunny day on  22nd of May attracted citizens and tourists to the “Histo Botev” square in Vratsa. The Green Balkans team was happy to answer the questions of children and adults and to provide information for the ecological network, as well information materials about Natura 2000 and the protected species like the Red-breasted Goose.

We had a meeting with teachers from the local schools, which took part in our quizzes for vultures and Natura 2000. Mrs. Katina Lalkova from “Nikola Voyvodov” Secondary school, Mrs. Gergana Komitska from “Hristo Botev” Secondary school – Vratsa, Mrs. Julieta Bosilkova from “Vasil Kanchov” Secondary school – Vratsa, received certificates of participation and also prizes for the students and for their help for the organization of the quizzes.

The park next to the square became home to the Natura 2000 and the bat photo exhibitions. All visitors had the opportunity to enjoy the wonderful photos and learn more information about this precious species and habitats.

We would like to thank the Vrachanski Balkan Nature Park, the Birds of Prey Protection Society and the Municipality of Vratsa.

Natura 2000
Natura 2000 is the largest coordinated network for nature conservation. More than 30% of the territory of Bulgaria falls within the scope of the network - 120 areas for the protection of wild birds and 234 areas for the protection of natural habitats.

Red-breasted Goose
The Red-breasted Goose is a globally endangered species, protected within the Natura 2000 ecological network. Bulgaria is an important country for the protection of the species - almost the entire world population spends the winter in the region of Primorska Dobrudzha.

Vultures
There are four species of vultures in Europe - Griffon, Black, Egyptian and Bearded Vulture. All of them are strictly protected by Bulgarian and European legislation. As rare and valuable species, they fall under the protection of the European ecological network Natura 2000. Bulgaria is home to only three of them – the Griffon, Black and Egyptian Vulture. The Bearded Vulture - a symbol of Bulgarian nature protection is considered extinct from the country.

Bats
33 from the 35 species of bats in Europe can be found in Bulgaria. They are of key importance for ecosystems. All bat species are protected by the Biodiversity Act, and the forest and underground habitats of the species are protected within the Natura 2000 ecological network.
