The tragic death of Cinereous Vulture Sliven in Kharkiv region, Ukraine

We regret to inform you that Cinereous Vulture Sliven, who became a famous traveler last month, was found dead in a wastewater reservoir near a cattle farm in Suha Hnylytsa village, Ukraine. Most probably, the bird was lured by the stray dog dead body that was in the reservoir and could not fly out of the "wastewater liquid", and drowned.

Origin of bird is wild, born 2017, rescued and donated by Government of Extremadura, Spain to Bulgaria. Bird was released 23.05.2019 near town of Kotel, East Balkan Mountain within 'Bright Future for Black Vulture' LIFE14 NAT/BG/649 project, aiming reintroduction of the species to Bulgaria.

The chain reaction between Bulgarian LIFE14 NAT/BG/649 project team and local nature conservationists in Ukraine  - Volodimir Buchko, Anton Vlaschenko, Irina Vorontsova and Viktoria Rosdolskay, made possible rapid visit the location of the vulture's death. It was the most rapid field visit executed upon to our call for help ever – literally in couple of hours!
The local ornithologists commented this record of a vulture in Eastern Ukraine as extraordinary. Because the territory of Kharkiv region is far away from the species range. However, one record of vultures in a few years was obtained by local ornithologists.

The greatest thanks for Viktoria Rosdolskay for rapid managing the searching operation, retreating the transmitter and pictures from the location of the Sliven's death!

Despite the tragic case with the bird, the human community of animal conservationists and rescue showed a high level of cooperation, and it inspires hope for future progress in nature conservation.

On behalf of the Bright Future for Black Vulture LIFE14 NAT/BG/649 project we are going to sent request to the Ministry of Energy and Environmental protection of Ukraine to enforce the low applicable and to secure the place in terms to prevent further deaths of wildlife.
