Vultures Return in Bulgaria is nominated for Best LIFE NATURE project for 2015

Our project has been selected among the 23 best NATURE projects of the LIFE financial instrument of the European Commission.

Vultures Return in Bulgaria LIFE08 NAT/BG/278 Project was the first project of Green Balkans which received funding within the financial instrument LIFE of the European Commission. The project started in 2010 and was prolonged with six months because of excellent results to finally end in June 2015, at an overall duration of 66 months.

The project was coordinated by Green Balkans – Stara Zagora, with the Fund for Wild Flora and Fauna as Associated Beneficiary and together with the irds of Prey Protection Society. Together we secured over 230 000 eur for the implementation of the project activities, attracting over 666 100 eur European funding. The project was supported by the Frankfurt Zoological Society and the German Federal Foundation for the Environment (DBU).

The nomination is a real honour for our entire team and we will keep fingers crossed to be among the Five Best NATURE projects. The winners will be announced on May 31st, within the Green Week in Brussels, where all nominees will get a special plaque.

We are proud to be among the best 23 NATURE projects of the European Commission as for less than five years we managed to achieve our main goal – we restored Griffon Vulture as a nesting species in the Balkan Mountains of Bulgaria, where it has been considered extinct for the past 50 years. We imported and released 210 Griffon Vultures and as a result, in 2014/2015 we counted a total of 12 breeding pairs and two newly established small colonies in Vrachanski Balkan and the Eastern Balkan Mountains. In 2015 we also saw the first baby vulture, successfully raised by parents, released within our project fledge in Vrachanski Balkan. We established contacts with hundreds of local farmers and stock-breeders; hunters and vets; students, tourists and visitors. More about our results can be found in the Layman Report attached below.

We are proud that there are two more Bulgarian nominees – projects of our colleagues from WWF and BSPB.

We are really honored and we will keep fingers crossed to fall among the Five Best projects of 2015!
