Species conservation

Amphibians and Reptiles

Amphibians and Reptiles

Bulgaria harbors 20 amphibian and 42 reptile species.

Unfortunately, our work for the conservation of these species is not quite active, being focused mainly on the conservation of their habitats.
In this regard, our project related to the establishment of NATURA 2000 was of great significance. During the project implementation, more than 100 specialists, some of which herpetologists, were involved in the field studies aimed at identifying protected zones. Over 20 protected sites were identified with an emphasis on conservation of rare reptiles and amphibians.

Green Balkans’ experts carried out herpetological studies at the Pomorie Lake (as part of the process of development of a Management Plan for the Lake) and in the region of Sarnena Sredna Gora Mountain.

In addition, the Organization participated in numerous confiscations of True Tortoises kept illegally by private owners. Almost 70 tortoises have been received at the Wildlife Rehabilitation and Breeding Center. Having undergone a treatment and rehabilitation therapy to recover from injuries or just to spend the winter at the Wildlife Rescue Center, 80% of them were released back into the wild.

Green Balkans is a member of the National Working Group for the conservation of reptiles and amphibians in Bulgaria, established on BSPB’s initiative.
