DNA samples of Lesser Kestrels at Green Balkans’ Rescue Centre

07.10.2014
The survey is part of an international study and a DNA analysis of the Lesser Kestrels in the Balkans.

For the purpose of performing a DNA analysis, blood samples were taken from 28 Lesser Kestrels from the stock breeding at Green Balkans’ Rescue Centre within “Lesser Kestrel Recovery” LIFE11 NAT/BG/360 project. This analysis is part of the study performed by the Greek biologist Anastasios Bounas, developing a PhD thesis “Phylogeography and Conservation Genetics of the Lesser Kestrel (Falco naumanni) in the Balkans”. The research is taking place in the Laboratory of Molecular Ecology and Conservation Genetics, Department of Biological Applications and Technologies, University of Ioannina, Greece.
Most of the birds bred at Green Balkans’ Rescue Center come from Spain, which will allow our Greek colleague to compare the genetics of the Lesser Kestrels from the Balkan population and those from Spain.
