Green Balkans at the European Mobility Week

Green Balkans at the European Mobility Week

04.10.2019
On Independence Day, during Open Streets Day, Maritza Blvd was closed to cars from the Water palace to the Adata Bridge making room for all sorts of car-free activities. Our team of volunteers placed an information booth communicating knowledge about rare and protected species from Bulgaria's fauna, including the Pygmy cormorant that can be seen in the Maritza River. The Griffon vulture named Gosho and the Sandwich tern mock-ups were most attractive to the visitors who learned about the NATURA 2000 sites, where these protected species can be found. Maritza River is also part of NATURA 2000, included for the purpose of conservation of suitable habitats for rare and endangered species. For the youngest visitors we had prepared drawing activities and NATURA 2000 board game. Finally, with the help of binoculars, everyone was able to observe the biodiversity in the river.
We thank our volunteer - Mina Popova, who represented Green Balkans.

The “European Mobility Week” campaign (September 16-22) encourages citizens, businesses and institutions to pay attention to mobility in their area. This year the Mobility Week’s theme is "Safe Walking and Cycling", under the motto "Walk with us!". Organizers are Directorate “Ecology and waste management” - Plovdiv Municipality. The main event, set by the European Commission for European Day without Vehicles - September 22, will be held on Maritza-South Blvd. throughout the day. To this end, the boulevard will be transformed into an ecological area open to people only, and restricted to cars. Activities during the day will be divided into three sections: Sport, Education and Arts, and Relax.
