Natura 2000 is the world’s  largest coordinated network for biodiversity protection. Its establishment aims the long-term conservation of important species and their habitats, significant for the community. Biodiversity conservation is a key priority ever since the EU establishment. The Natura 2000 network consists currently of more than 27 300 protected areas and has a total area of more than 1 million km2, comprising nearly 18,4% of the total EU terrestrial area. At present 114 protected areas for conservation of wild birds and 228 protected areas for conservation of other animal or plant species and habitats are included in the network. Additional information:

Natura 2000 is a European network of protected areas that aims to ensure the long-term survival of Europe's most valuable and threatened species and habitats, in line with major international environmental and biodiversity conservation arrangements. The aim of this ecological network is to maintain biodiversity in conjunction with sustainable regional development, including in economic, social and cultural context.
Sites within the ecological network are determined in accordance with two of the European Union's major environmental directives - the Habitats and Birds Directives.
Despite the great importance of the network and the large network coverage in Bulgaria, there is still lack of information among a large part of society. Further information on the network can be found on the New Horizons project website - https://greenbalkans.org/natura2000/newhorisons/bg/Mesets-na-ekologichnata-mrezha-NATURA-2000.p787
