More Griffon Vultures tagged in the Vrachanski Balkan Nature Park

16.11.2017
A total of five young Griffon Vultures were captured and trapped in October and November 2017 near the village of Dolno Ozirovo, Vrachanski Balkan NP. In order to track and identify the birds, they were marked with standard ornithological and colour rings, as well as blue wing tags with yellow inscriptions: P, A0, A1, A2 and A3. The sixth marked vulture is a six-year old female, arrived from Spain in 2011 and previously tagged with yellow wing tags K39. The bird was released in May 2013 but in November 2017 voluntarily entered the aviary. After six years into the wild, the tags were in poor condition, so they were replaced with new, blue tags with yellow inscriptions A4.

Two of the vultures – P and A4 (the adult female K39) were tagged with GPS/GSM transmitters, which will allow us to follow their movement and adaptation into the wild. Let us remind you that you can also follow the birds live here:
The coordinates sent by the transmitter suggest that the vulture tagged P is one of the birds hatched in 2017 in Vrachanski Balkan NP. This will allow us to follow in detail the movement of a young bird born into the wild for the first time.

The birds were tagged by our colleagues Hristo Peshev and Emilian Stoynov (FWFF) and Georgi Stoyanov and Danail Kilarski (BPPS) within the Vultures Back to LIFE14 NAT/BG/649 Project.
