Hide for observation of the vulture feeding site in Pelevun

The underground hide built by Green Balkans team at our vulture feeding site near the town of Ivaylovgrad has already been functioning. This facility could be used for monitoring and taking pictures of birds without disturbing them.

Environmentalists give a warning about alterations in the Hunting Act

Sofia, 24 June 2008 – The Coalition of 30 NGOs “Let Nature Remain in Bulgaria” announced that the deputy Yunal Taksim together with other deputies submitted а bill for alterations in the Hunting Act on the 20th of June. The suggested alterations were not officially announced and the bill has not yet been published on the website of the National Assembly but the Parliamentary Commission for Agriculture and Forestry will consider it today on first reading.

A bill for the ban of cyanide leaching on the territory of Bulgaria

In the period 18-20 June, 2008 in the town of Pazardjik activists of Green Balkans and other member organizations of Coalition Cyanide Free Bulgaria implemented a campaign for support of a petition for the ban of cyanide leaching on the territory of the country.

The media were introduced to facts proving that the European Bird Directive was violated and to scientific arguments that the slopes of Rila Mountain beneath the borders of the National Park must be protected as a part of NATURA 2000. Again was referred to the problem with the devastation of the forests in Rila and the disturbance of the water balance of the mountain.

Environment: Commission sends warning to Bulgaria over failure to protect wild birds

The European Commission is sending a first written warning to Bulgaria for taking insufficient measures to protect nature. The case concerns Bulgaria's failure to designate adequate Special Protection Areas (SPAs) for migratory and vulnerable wild bird species, which violates the EU directive on the conservation of wild birds.

An environmental educational program took place in Belozem

From 19 to 23 May, 2008 in the village of Belozem - an European village of the stork for the year 2005 – was held a cultural and educational program on an environmental subject-matter. In the program participated children from the 1st to 8th school grade.

Green Balkans participated in monitoring researches of the ichtiofauna in the wetlands along the Danube

On May 15 and 16, 2008 in the wetlands along the Danube River and more particularly in the zones “Kalimok-Brashlen”, “Garvanski blata” and “Malak Preslavets” marshland were executed researches of the ichtiofauna and especially of the species Misgurnus fossilis, also known as weatherfish. The research team consisted of specialist from Green Balkans Federation, Regional Inspectorate for Environment and Waters – Ruse and the Museum of natural science in Plovdiv.
