Recognition for Pomorie Lake at 8th European Ramsar Meeting

Green Balkans NGO expert has participated in the 8th European Meeting of the Parties to the Ramsar Convention for wetlands conservation. Great recognition for the natural heritage of Pomorie Lake and Green Balkans work was the second prize for the video “Pomorie – the wild lagoon”. The video got the second award during the video competition held in the framework of the international forum.

European Ramsar Meeting was held from 20 to 24 October in the city of Kufstein (Austria). Bulgaria was represented by National Focal from Ministry of Environment and Water and NGO experts. The main objective of the meeting was preparation for the 12th Convention of Parties (COP) that will be held at Punta del Este, Uruguay in June, 2015. In the intensive program have been included contemporary topics related to wise use of resources provided by wetlands as well as discussions on draft resolutions for the upcoming COP. The emphasis was on following topics: new strategy for enlargement of floodplain area aiming to mitigate flood damages (current topic at Austria and the Western Balkans after heavy floods in the past summer); wetlands and agriculture – opportunities for lowering its negative impact; conservation of peatlands and Arctic wetlands; wetlands’ ecosystem services; effective management of Ramsar sites; role of eco tourism and visitor centres in promoting wetland conservation; cultural values of wetlands.

During the meeting new Ramsar Sites Information Service as well as results from research project on tracking changes on Mediterranean wetlands through satellite studies. Two field visits have been organized in Tirol region – Schwem Walchsee peat bog and karst area Wilder Kaiser (Ramsar site).

The program was supplemented with poster session presenting activities on wetlands research and conservation and wetland video competition. Green Balkans NGO presented a poster “Restoration of habitat for water birds at Pomorie Wetland Complex” exhibition. Additional printed materials on Pomorie Lake, Dnube River and international project LIFE10 NAT/IT/256 MC-SALT „Environmental Management and Conservation in Mediterranean Saltworks and Coastal Lagoons” have been distributed among participants in the event. Results achieved by Green Balkans NGO in conservation of Pomorie Wetland Complex Ramsar site and other wetlands in Bulgaria have been highly evaluated by experts from across Europe.

Competition of wetlands’ promoting videos/films was held as an open film evening. The event was attended by official participants in the Ramsar meeting as well as local people of Kufstein and surroundings. Each spectator has been handed a vote form and after counting of the votes first three videos have been handed prizes. Fist prize was for a video on Danube by ICPDR and third prize was for a movie on Vrana Lake (Croatia) by Croatioan Ministry of Environment. “Pomorie – the wild lagoon” video was voted second prize. The video is produced by Lybomir Hristov within a project of Green Balkans NGO and is part of the interactive exhibition at Pomorie Lake Visitor centre.
