Three Griffon Vultures will land from the Netherlands… on the wings of a Bulgaria Air flight!

17.12.2013
The two ladies, granted by Burgers’ Zoo are coming with their names - Willy hatched in 2012, while Simone - in 2013. The vultures are named after two curators of the Dutch Zoo, who kindly assisted their transport to Bulgaria. The Dierenrijk vulture is a male and we are still waiting for his name.

The three vultures will join the Vultures Return in Bulgaria LIFE08 NAT/BG/278 Project and after several months of adaptation, will be released into the Balkan Mountains.

The vultures will fly as cargo on a regular flight of Bulgaria Air. Due to their huge size, the transport of the birds is pretty complex and expensive. Furthermore, minutes before the flight, it turned our that the passengers have brought too much luggage on board and the big transport boxes with the vultures cannot be fitted on the plane! Only the young male was successfully boarded while the two ladies were left to wait for another flight. You can imagine the situation both exporets and importers got into - two vultures, left at the airport by no means equal two delayed pieces of luggage! While our Dutch colleagues were desperately seeking a solution and the Bulgarian team was already on the way to Sofia, the Malenstein Air freight company managed to fight over additional space and successfully board all three bords.

This is why we are extremely grateful to Bulgaria Air and the freight company Malenstein Air, as they secured the timely landing of the three odd passengers.

We are very grateful to their cooperation, understanding and support!

We are also grateful for the trust of the two Dutch Zoos, who believed in our success and the return of vultures in Bulgaria!
