We commemorated the 30th anniversary of the international initiative European Green Belt

25.09.2019
This year, the European Green Belt international initiative turns 30 years since its launch. The Green Balkans team decided to mark the anniversary together with Strandja Nature Park, the Association of Back to Nature Youth and Sport Club, as well as representatives of both Bulgarian and Turkish media.

For two days we visited a great number of natural and cultural sites in the Strandja Mountain region, on the two sides of the border with Turkey.

On our southern neighbor’s side we got to enjoy the beauty of Igneada Longoz Forests National Park, to visit Dupnisa Cave and a Rock-hewn Church near the border with Bulgaria (it is an interesting fact that among locals the church is known as a monastery).

On the other side of the border, in Bulgaria, our kind hosts from the Strandja Nature Park took us around the Visitor center of the Park and told us a lot about its gems and history. We also visited the Thracian Sanctuary in Mishkova niva area and the Dokuzak waterfall , which is the largest waterfall in Stranja Nature Park.

Not only the participants enjoyed the wonderful natural and cultural diversity of Strandja - part of the Green Belt,  but they also learned more about the initiative and, most importantly,  about its main objective, namely preservation of the abundant diversity of the Iron Curtain border areas.
