24th International Bat Night

01.09.2020

Events

Presentations, children drawings, bat gymnastics, "bat games", various workshops and raffles, art workshops, exhibitions, quizzes, presentations and films will provoke your interest in the mysterious life of bats.

Our goal is to show that bats are not scary at all, on the contrary they are different and cute. Bulgaria is home to 33 of the 35 European bat species and all of them are insectivorous. Bats are very useful because most of the insects they eat are pests in agriculture, and bats in cities help fight mosquitoes - a single Common Pipistrelle can eat up to 1,000 mosquitoes in a single night! That is why we should all know more about how important bats are so we can protect them in the future. Currently, one of the ways to protect some of the 6,000 caves in Bulgaria is if they host bat colonies. Many of these caves are included in habitats protected in the NATURA 2000 network under the Habitats Directive - habitat 8310 Undeveloped caves.
This year’s campaign will also focus on the issue of the COVID-19 distribution from bats.

Additional information about the initiative:

The International Bat Night celebration was first initiated by the EUROBATS Secretariat - the Agreement on the Conservation of European Bat Species.
Celebrated for the first time in 1990 in France and Poland, today the European Bat Night is organized in more than 30 countries, including Bulgaria. In 2012, the United States, the Philippines, Azerbaijan, Israel, Tunisia, Ukraine and Lebanon joined the event for the first time. With this, the Bat Night became an international event exceeding the scale of the "Old Continent", which aims to introduce more people to the unique way of life and the great importance of one of the most interesting animals on the planet - bats. Western countries usually celebrate the Bat Night on the last weekend of August, but in Bulgaria we are all still on vacation at that time, so we are waiting for students to start school and after September 15 we begin our International Bat Night information campaign.
