"Hristo Botev" National Professional High School - Velingrad joined the International Bat Night campaign

The event was organized by 10 students from 8th grade under the guidance of their teacher eng. Filip Ustabashiev and held on October 28.

It started with activities, including a presentation prepared by the students and a discussion dedicated to the "winged mammals”. The most fun part was the online quiz "The Secret World of Bats", with 20 questions revealing interesting features of the bats life.

The winner in the quiz is Yordanka Trendafilova, followed by Petko Damov and Iliana Trendafilova, all from 8 "A" class of the Forestry High School.

The information and educational materials for the event were provided as part of the activities of the “Natura 2000 in Bulgaria – New Horizons” project, as well as by Eurobats.

It was a pleasure for the Green Balkans team to partner again with the management of "Hristo Botev" National Professional High School – Velingrad and eng. Filip Ustabashiev.

Additional information about the International Bat Night:
The initiative to celebrate the event is led by the Secretariat of EUROBATS – the Agreement on the Conservation of European Bat Species. Celebrated for the first time in 1990 in France and Poland, today the European Bat Night is organized in more than 30 countries, including Bulgaria. In 2012, the United States, the Philippines, Azerbaijan, Israel, Tunisia, Ukraine and Lebanon joined the event for the first time. With this, the Bat Night became an international event going beyond the borders of the "Old Continent", which aims to introduce people to the unique life and the great importance of one of the most interesting animals on the planet - bats. Western countries usually celebrate the Bat Night on the last weekend of August, but in Bulgaria we are all still on vacation. That is why we are waiting for students to start school and after September 15 the Bat Night information campaign is launched.

Natura 2000
Natura 2000 is the largest coordinated network for nature conservation. More than 30% of the territory of Bulgaria falls within the scope of the network - 120 areas for the protection of wild birds and 234 areas for the protection of natural habitats.

33 from the 35 species of bats in Europe can be found in Bulgaria. They are of key importance for ecosystems. All bat species are protected by the Biodiversity Act, and the forest and underground habitats of the species are protected within the Natura 2000 ecological network.
