The long-awaited Bat Night in Plovdiv will be held at the Vienna Pavilion in the Tsar Simeon's Garden from 16:00 h on October 23 (Friday).

The organizers Green Balkans are joined by Mrs. Vyara Koleva, the director of "Ecology and Waste Management" Directorate of the municipality of Plovdiv, some friends from the "Djendema" Cave Club – Plovdiv, who will demonstrate equipment in cave exploration, and " Paldin " Speleo Club – with a presentation about bats and caves. The event is supported by the Environment and Water Regional Inspectorate – Plovdiv.

This year's program starts at 16:00 h with a presentation and an exhibition on bats. In parallel there will be an art studio for the younger ones. Krum Sirakov and Dimitar Kunev from Djendema Speleo Club will demonstrate cave equipment and research techniques for the older ones.

At 16:30 we will read the “Adventures of Darki the bat” from the children's book, and at 17:30 there will be a presentation with interesting facts about bats and Natura 2000 ecological network.

At 18:00 Alexander Stoev from "Paldin" Speleo Club will set a presentation on the connection between bats and caves.
For those who are patient and wait for the sunset, we will turn on our ultrasonic detector at 18:15. If the weather is right, we will have the opportunity to eavesdrop on the bats living in the city garden.

Bats
33 of all 35 species of bats in Europe are found in Bulgaria and they are of key importance for ecosystems. All of them are protected by the Biodiversity Act, and the forest and underground habitats of the species are protected areas of the Natura 2000 ecological network.

Natura 2000
Natura 2000 is the largest coordinated network for nature conservation. More than 30% of the territory of Bulgaria falls within the scope of the network - 120 areas for the protection of wild birds and 234 areas for the protection of natural habitats.

Additional information about the International Bat Night:
The initiative to celebrate the event is led by the Secretariat of EUROBATS – the Agreement on the Conservation of European Bat Species. Celebrated for the first time in 1990 in France and Poland, today the European Bat Night is organized in more than 30 countries, including Bulgaria. In 2012, the United States, the Philippines, Azerbaijan, Israel, Tunisia, Ukraine and Lebanon joined the event for the first time. With this, the Bat Night became an international event going beyond the borders of the "Old Continent", which aims to introduce people to the unique life and the great importance of one of the most interesting animals on the planet - bats. Western countries usually celebrate the Bat Night on the last weekend of August, but in Bulgaria we are all still on vacation. That is why we are waiting for students to start school and after September 15 the Bat Night information campaign is launched.

Green Balkans is a member of the BatLife Europe international organization, with the support of KFFOE (Austrian Coordination Center for Bat Conservation and Research).
