Bat Night in “Pomorie lake” Visitor Center

***
10/04/2021
International Bat Night was celebrated as a National Information campaign that took place in 11 places of the country, and in other localities will be carried through individually.

On 30 th of September  Green Balkans in partnership with Pomorie Municipality celebrated the event in „Pomorie lake” Visitor Center. Together with fifth grade students from “Ivan Vazov” Preliminary school and their teacher Mrs. Antonina Ichkova we had  a walk alongside the coast of Pomorie Lake and were having  discussions about bats.

In the Visitor Center the students were able to see bats’ exhibition, photo exhibition about Naturа 2000 ecological network and informational banners about bats. Curious facts about the secret wildlife of the protected species were presented by Green Balkans’ team. The students had the chance to touch a real caver helmet, by which a lot of bats have been studied not only in our country, but also in other parts of the world. They were glad to know why we eavesdrop the bats, and at the end “flew” as bats posing for the photos.
Useful educational materials (like posters, leaflets and stickers) were left on Mrs. Ichkova disposal and her students.

We would like to thank to the management of “Ivan Vazov” Preliminary school, especially to Mrs. Antonina Ichkova and the fifth grade students who declared their interest and enthusiasm in the flying mammals.

More for the initiative:
The EUROBATS Secretariat has the initiative for celebrating the event under the Agreement on  the Conservation of Populations of European Bats.
Celebrated for the first time 25 years ago, today the European Bat Night is organized in more than 30 countries, including Bulgaria. USA, The Philippines, Azerbaijan, Israel, Tunisia, Ukraine and Lebanon joined the event for the first time in 2012. Thus the Bat Night became international, exceeding the scale of the “Old continent”, which aims to introduce more people with the unique way of life and great importance of some of the most interesting animals on the planet – the bats. Usually the western countries celebrate the Bat Night in the last weekend of August, but in Bulgaria we are all still on vacation then J, that’s why we wait for the beginning of school year and we unfold the informational campaign of Bat Night after 15th of September.
Green Balkans are a member of the international organization BatLife Europe, with the support by  KFFOE (Austrian Coordination Centre for Bat Conservation and Research).

Natura 2000
Natura 2000 is the largest coordinated network for nature conservation. More than 30% of the territory of Bulgaria falls within the scope of the network - 120 areas for the protection of wild birds and 234 areas for the protection of natural habitats.

Bats
33 of all 35 bats species in Europe are to be seen in Bulgaria and they are of key importance for the ecosystems. All of them are protected under the Biodiversity Law  and forest and underground habitats of species are protected zones within the Natura 2000 ecological network.
