Bat Night in the Town of Vratsa

The celebration of the International Bat Night, organized by the Vrachanski Balkan Nature Park Directorate on October 13th, was held with great interest. More than 50 students from “Kozma Trichkov” Secondary School, “Otets Paisii” Secondary School  and “Hristo Botev” Secondary School,  Vratsa took an active part in the initiative.

Experts from the park and volunteers had prepared an interesting presentation about the life and biology of bats, the species found around the world and in Bulgaria, and how to act if we find a bat. An interactive “bat and moth” game taught students about echolocation and bat hunting methods. The initiative continued with workshops on origami, drawing a bat, and arranging a puzzle. The experts from the park also surprised the children with a new game “Place Me”. The aim of the game is for the blindfolded participant to be able to place the bat’s eyes and mouth in the correct place. An entertaining raffle tested the children’s knowledge and many of them walked away with promotional gifts from the Park Directorate.

International Bat Night is part of an international campaign celebrated annually on the initiative of the Agreement on the Conservation of Population of European Bats – EUROBATS. Celebrated for the first time in 1990 in France and Poland, today it is organized in more than 30 countries, including Bulgaria. The initiative aims to introduce more people to the unique way of life and the great importance of one of the most interesting animals on the planet - bats.
