Bat colonies in distress

As always with the beginning of winter we get more calls for bat colonies in distress, usually chased away from their wintering places. Very often these colonies end up at a nearby terrace or attic where they try to hide. Luckily for us and for them, this time the people turned out very well-intentioned and called the Green Balkans Wildlife Rehabilitation and Breeding Center for help.

Our team took in the bats and after establishing they were in good health, they passed a short rehabilitation course - with plenty of food and fluids so they will recover their strengths.
Actually, open terraces are not at all adequate for bats during winter, as temperatures go below 0°C. That is why in such cases we have to find an adequate place for the colony, as close as possible to their natural habitat. This particular colony was of common noctules, commonly found at the entrance of caves, but the species has successfully adapted for life in urban environment so we chose to settle them in an abandoned building in the periphery of Stara Zagora.
There is no reason to be bothered or scared by bats, on the contrary they can be good neighbors, if you just make some room for them!

Natura 2000
Natura 2000 is the largest coordinated network for nature conservation. More than 30% of the territory of Bulgaria falls within the scope of the network - 120 areas for the protection of wild birds and 234 areas for the protection of natural habitats.

33 from the 35 species of bats in Europe can be found in Bulgaria. They are of key importance for ecosystems. All bat species are protected by the Biodiversity Act, and the forest and underground habitats of the species are protected within the Natura 2000 ecological network.

The Wildlife Rehabilitation and Breeding Center information activities are implemented within the ‘NATURA 2000 in Bulgaria - NEW HORIZONS’ LIFE17 GIE/BG/000371 project.
