National Online Quiz about Natura 2000, bats and cetaceans for 8th and 9th grade from all over the country

Green Balkans is a national, non-government, nature conservation organisation working for more than 30 years in the field of protecting rare and endangered species and their habitats

With care for the environment we live in, the European Union started an ecological network of interconnected land and sea areas. NATURA 2000 is the biggest network of protected areas in the world. In Bulgaria the protected areas network covers 34.4% of the whole territory in the country both land and sea.

Green Balkans and other nature conservation organisations work towards protecting and preservation of all these unique and beautiful places in Bulgaria. One of the directions we focus our efforts is the conservation of bats and cetaceans in Bulgaria and Black Sea. Some of the bats and dolphins are registered in the Habitats Directive. This means that their habitats are under the protection of the NATURA 2000 ecological network. This aims to preserve these areas.

If you want to learn more about the unique characteristics of bats, dolphins and their habitats, the ’NATURA 2000 in Bulgaria – New Horizons’ project team invites you to participate in online quiz about NATURA 2000, the bats and the cetaceans. This year our quiz is devoted to the mammals that live under the water and in the air.

Natura 2000
Natura 2000 is the largest coordinated network for nature conservation. More than 30% of the territory of Bulgaria falls within the scope of the network - 120 areas for the protection of wild birds and 234 areas for the protection of natural habitats.

33 from the 35 species of bats in Europe can be found in Bulgaria. They are of key importance for ecosystems. All bat species are protected by the Biodiversity Act, and the forest and underground habitats of the species are protected within the Natura 2000 ecological network.

There are 3 species of cetaceans in the Black Sea - Bottlenose Dolphin, Short-beaked Common Dolphin and Harbour Porpoise, endemic to our sea. Persecuted in the past, not much is known today about the state of the populations of the three species. The Bottlenose Dolphin and the Harbour Porpoise are subject to protection by the Natura 2000 ecological network and special marine protected areas are declared for their protection.
