The first large-scale mural in Svilengrad is now a fact. The mural represents one of the rarest bird species in Bulgaria and an emblematic species for the region - the Lesser Kestrel.

The initiative is part of the Green Balkans project "NATURA 2000 in Bulgaria - New Horizons", which aims to promote the world's largest ecological network - the European Natura 2000 network, of which Bulgaria is also a part.

The Lesser Kestrel is one of the species protected in the European network. Until recently, it was under the category “extinct” for the country. And was successfully reintroduced in Bulgaria after a conservation program started by Green Balkans, implemented in the period 2013-2017 under the "Greater chance for the Lesser Kestrel in Bulgaria" LIFE11 NAT/BG/360 project, together with the Spanish organization Dema and the German organization EURONATUR. Today, the Lesser Kestrel numbers have gone up to 40 pairs, which nest in the Module for adaptation in the village of Levka.

The mural was designed and painted by the team of "140 ideas" (Ventsislav Yosifov, Ivo Iliev) - one of the most famous graffiti artists in the country.

Another school in the same city is also going to be painted - the Ivan Vazov Primary School. The two schools are the first in a series of buildings in five cities that will be painted with emblematic for the respective regions species of European conservation importance. Among them is the EVN building in Plovdiv, and the buildings to be painted in Varna, Stara Zagora and Burgas are also being specified. Green Balkans reminds that all those interested in painting the facades of private or public buildings can contact us at the contacts listed below.

Natura 2000
Natura 2000 is the largest coordinated network for nature conservation. More than 30% of the territory of Bulgaria falls within the scope of the network - 120 areas for the protection of wild birds and 234 areas for the protection of natural habitats.

Lesser Kestrel
The Lesser Kestrel – once extinct as a nesting species in the country and successfully restored 25 years later, thanks to the Green Balkans activities in the Sakar Mountains. The species and its habitats are preserved in the Natura 2000 ecological network.
