The first large-scale mural in Svilengrad will adorn “Dr. Petar Beron” Secondary School

The painting of the first large-scale mural in the town of Svilengrad has begun. The mural represents one of the rarest bird species in Bulgaria and an emblematic species for the region – the Lesser Kestrel.

The initiative is part of the Green Balkans’ project “NATURA 2000 in Bulgaria – New Horizons”, which aims in promoting the world’s largest ecological network – the European, of which Bulgaria is part.

Lesser Kestrel is one of the species, protected within the European network Natura 2000 and until recently, extinct from the country. The Lesser Kestrel has returned, after the beginning of the Green Balkans conservation program, implemented in the period 2013 – 2017 under the project “Greater chance for Lesser Kestrel in Bulgaria” LIFE11 NAT/BG/360, in partnership with the Spanish organization DEMA and the German – EURONATUR. Today the Lesser Kestrel number in 40 pairs, breeding in the Release and Adaptation Module in the Village of Levka.
The graffiti project is implemented by the team of 140 Ideas (Ventsislav Yosifov and Ivo Iliev) – one of the famous graffiti artists in Bulgaria.

“We are glad that schools have expressed a desire to paint their facades, as we believe that the most important thing for the conservation of our biodiversity is to involve young people in our common mission to preserve it”, states Elena Stoeva – Project Manager “Natura 2000 in Bulgaria – New Horizons”.

“We are committed to the cause of Green Balkans for nature conservation and we are glad to have the opportunity to participate in such a joint project", amplified Ventsislav Yosifov from the 140 Ideas Team.

Another school facade painting in the city is upcoming – the facade of “Ivan Vazov” First Primary School. Both schools are the first of a number of buildings in 5 cities, forthcoming to be painted with emblematic for the region species from European conservation importance. Among them is the building of EVN in Plovdiv, while still specifying the buildings to be painted in Varna, Stara Zagora and Burgas.
Green Balkans reminds that all those interested in painting the facades of private or public buildings, can contact us at the contacts listed below.
