The painting activities begin for the second mural in Svilengrad

“Ivan Vazov” Primary School
The central façade of “Ivan Vazov” Primary School in Svilengrad will get a new look – a mural depicting two Lesser Kestrels. The mural represents one of the rarest bird species in Bulgaria and an emblematic species for the region of Svilengrad.

The initiative is part of the Green Balkans’ “Natura 2000 in Bulgaria – New Horizons” LIFE17 GIE/BG/371 project that aims to promote the world’s largest ecological network – the European NATURA 2000 network, of which Bulgaria is also a part.

The Lesser Kestrel is one of the species protected in the European network. Until recently, it was considered extinct for the country. It "returned" to Bulgaria after the start of the Green Balkans conservation program, implemented in the period 2013-2017 under the "Greater chance for the Lesser Kestrel in Bulgaria" LIFE11 NAT/BG/360 project, together with the Spanish organization DEMA and the German organization EURONATUR. Today, the Lesser Kestrel numbers have reached 40 pairs, which nest in the Module for adaptation in the village of Levka.

The “140 ideas” team designed and will paint the mural (Ventsislav Yosifov, Ivo Iliev) – one of the most famous graffiti artists in the country.

Here is what Ventsislav Yosifov shared with us: “Together with Green Balkans we work for the same cause – a preserved nature and building an active civil society – here is why we are glad for the opportunity to participate in the execution of the Lesser Kestrels mural on the façade of a school. We are very happy to announce that our work was possible thanks to EVN Bulgaria."

The façade of ’’Dr. Petar Beron’’ Secondary School in Svilengrad was painted with a mural of the protected species, part of the Natura 2000 ecological network. And now together with “Ivan Vazov” Primary School, both schools are the first ones from many in five cities to be painted with emblematic for the region species of European conservation importance. Among them is the building of EVN in Plovdiv, while still specifying the buildings to be painted in Varna, Stara Zagora and Burgas. Green Balkans reminds that everyone interested in painting the facades of private or public buildings, can contact us at the contacts listed below.

Natura 2000

Lesser Kestrel
The Lesser Kestrel – once extinct as a nesting species in the country and successfully restored 25 years later, thanks to the Green Balkans activities in the Sakar Mountains. The species and its habitats are preserved in the Natura 2000 ecological network.
