Three Bulgarian Projects Have Been Nominated for the NATURA 2000 Аwards of the LIFE Program of the European Commission.

The candidates for the NATURA 2000 awards of the LIFE Program of the European Commission have been announced.

For another consecutive year the European Commission distinguishes achievements in the management and protection of Natura 2000 sites. The aim of the awards is to promote and honor the most successful achievements and to raise awareness of the network of protected sites and its role in preserving Europe's natural heritage, while promoting social and economic benefits.

This year 40 applicants are nominated in the following categories - Conservation on land, Marine conservation, Communication, Socio-economic benefits, Cross-border cooperation, Citizens’ Award. Projects and organizations from Estonia, Latvia, Austria, Slovenia, Croatia, Greece, Romania, Germany, Italy, France, Spain, Portugal and Bulgaria are nominated for the award.  Bulgaria is nominated as follows: categories Communication and Conservation on land with the following projects – “NATURA 2000 – New Horizons in Bulgaria” , “Iconic Vultures restored in NATURA 2000 sites in Bulgaria based on reintroductions”, and “Code Name Pelican: Restoring the Lower Danube Ecosystem for birds and people”.

The team of independent experts is reviewing the submitted applications and the finalists will be announced in March 2022.
