[28-05-2021] We celebrated the NATURA 2000 Day in Burgas as part of the Green Balkans tour
On 28 May we celebrated the Natura 2000 Day in Burgas with the support of the Burgas Municipality.
The event took place in the Seaside Garden where the exhibitions of Natura 2000 and bats were displayed. The realistic models of the Griffon Vulture, Sandwich Tern, Red-breasted Goose and Lesser Kestrel were shown as well.
Many citizens examined the Green Balkans exhibition stand. They had many questions about the species and the ecological network. Also, they had the opportunity to learn more about the vultures found in Bulgaria, the Lesser Kestrel that has returned in our country and the cetaceans’ conservation activities in the Black Sea. Furthermore, they could hear more about the biology of the bats, the migration of the Red-breasted Goose and the return of the Saker Falcon as a nesting species in our state. And about many other species that Green Balkans is working with for years.

Natura 2000
Natura 2000 is the largest coordinated network for nature conservation. More than 30% of the territory of Bulgaria falls within the scope of the network - 120 areas for the protection of wild birds and 234 areas for the protection of natural habitats.
Sandwich Tern
In Bulgaria, the Sandwich Tern nests only on Pomorie and Atanasovsko lakes. Thanks to years of hard work, today the population of the species in Pomorie Lake is the largest on the Balkan Peninsula. Listed as an endangered species and included in the Birds Directive, the Sandwich Tern and its habitats are protected by the Natura 2000 ecological network.
Cetaceans
There are 3 species of cetaceans in the Black Sea - Bottlenose Dolphin, Short-beaked Common Dolphin and Harbour Porpoise, endemic to our sea. Persecuted in the past, not much is known today about the state of the populations of the three species. The Bottlenose Dolphin and the Harbour Porpoise are subject to protection by the Natura 2000 ecological network and special marine protected areas are declared for their protection.
Red-breasted Goose
The Red-breasted Goose is a globally endangered species, protected within the Natura 2000 ecological network. Bulgaria is an important country for the protection of the species - almost the entire world population spends the winter in the region of Primorska Dobrudzha.
Griffon Vulture
Widespread and numerous in the past, at the end of the last century the Griffon Vulture had only 1-2 active nests restricted to the Eastern Rhodopes. Thanks to the efforts of conservation organizations, today the population of the species is growing and we can see it in the Balkan Mountains, Eastern Rhodopes and Kresna. The species and its habitats are protected by the Natura 2000 ecological network.
Lesser Kestrel
The Lesser Kestrel – once extinct as a nesting species in the country and successfully restored 25 years later, thanks to the Green Balkans activities in the Sakar Mountains. The species and its habitats are preserved in the Natura 2000 ecological network.
Bats
33 from the 35 species of bats in Europe can be found in Bulgaria. They are of key importance for ecosystems. All bat species are protected by the Biodiversity Act, and the forest and underground habitats of the species are protected within the Natura 2000 ecological network.
Saker Falcon
The Saker Falcon is a globally endangered species listed as critically endangered in Bulgaria. Although it was widespread in the past, in 2018 the first active nest of the species for the last 10 years was reported. The species and its habitats are subject to protection by the Natura 2000 ecological network.
