Another bird has been given a chance at life thanks to the quick response of people in Svilengrad and the good cooperation between the local community, institutions, and Green Balkans. The signal was reported by employees of “Golden Eye”, who spotted a stork in distress and sought assistance through the Municipality of Svilengrad. Thanks to the prompt communication, experts from the Green Balkans’ Demonstration Centre in the village of Levka arrived at the scene, provided first aid to the bird, and prepared it for transport.
The case is yet another example of the active involvement of the local community in the Svilengrad area. During this season, reports of birds in distress have been regularly received from the area, most often concerning storks. The timely response of residents and the good cooperation between Green Balkans, the Municipality of Svilengrad, and the employees of the Regional Food Safety Directorate (ODBH) make it possible for most of these birds to receive timely assistance.
The case is also a good example of one of the additional benefits of continuous conservation work in the field. Green Balkans experts are present in the area as part of the activities of the project “Life for the Lesser Kestrel” (LIFE19 NAT/BG/001017). In addition to caring for the Lesser Kestrel colony in the village of Levka and welcoming curious visitors to the Centre, where they introduce them to the nature of the Sakar Protected Area, the experts know the area well and have established strong and lasting relationships with local people and institutions. This enables them to respond quickly to reports of wild animals in distress as well. In this way, the project has a broader impact – contributing not only to the conservation of the Lesser Kestrel, but also to creating better conditions for the protection of wildlife throughout the region.
The bird will be admitted to the Green Balkans Wildlife Rescue Centre in Stara Zagora, where it will undergo a veterinary examination and receive the necessary treatment.
