12.10.2021
On the 6th of October the RHM-Blagoevgrad team and Green Balkans celebrated the Bat Night in the town. Traditionally the Museum responded to the initiative for celebrating the International Bat Night. Students from the American University in the town and citizens also joined to the event. They were told about the importance of bats during the presentation held by Elena Stoeva from Green Balkans’ team.

This year due to the constraints connected with the COVID crisis we did not organize the traditional mass activities with children, the creative workshops and the other planned events.
That’s why we use the occasion to remind you about two beautiful events, organized by our partners in RHM – Blagoevgrad, namely:
- the theater on the book “The Adventures of Darky The Bat” realized by Mrs. Dzhivdzhorska and Children Theater “Shturcho” – Blagoevgrad - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_-Fx-1svTWg&feature=youtu.be
- the workshop and exhibition “Drawing with light” – joined initiative of RHM Blagoevgrad and a team for ALOS Centre: Lyuben Kuleliev (photographer), Boyan Bahrin (light painter), Rositsa Mrinova (participants’ ideas moderator), supported by OF “Plovdiv 2019” - https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?vanity=lightpainting&set=a.731931807254321

As an integral part of the event  in the Museum , the official opening of the exhibition of Green Balkans – “Natura 2000 in Bulgaria” took place. It presented beautiful habitats and species, subject of protection by the European ecological network. The exhibition shows photos of Emil Enchev and is exposed in different parts of the country with the collaboration of our partners. Our aim is to introduce the importance of the network and the need for its protection to a maximum number of people. The exhibition will stay in the Museum till the end of the month, after that it will be exposed on the territory of Nature Park “Belasitsa” and National Park “Rila”, which we will inform you about later.

We use the opportunity to thank our colleagues from RHM – Blagoevgrad for their enthusiasm and dedication on celebrating the Bat Night and their eagerness to cooperate us.

More for the initiative:
The EUROBATS Secretariat has the initiative for celebrating the event under the Agreement on  the Conservation of Populations of European Bats.
Celebrated for the first time 25 years ago, today the European Bat Night is organized in more than 30 countries, including Bulgaria. USA, The Philippines, Azerbaijan, Israel, Tunisia, Ukraine and Lebanon joined the event for the first time in 2012. Thus the Bat Night became international, exceeding the scale of the “Old continent”, which aims to introduce more people with the unique way of life and great importance of some of the most interesting animals on the planet – the bats. Usually the western countries celebrate the Bat Night in the last weekend of August, but in Bulgaria we are all still on vacation then J, that’s why we wait for the beginning of school year and we unfold the informational campaign of Bat Night after 15th of September.
Green Balkans are a member of the international organization BatLife Europe, with the support by  KFFOE (Austrian Coordination Centre for Bat Conservation and Research).

Natura 2000
Natura 2000 is the largest coordinated network for nature conservation. More than 30% of the territory of Bulgaria falls within the scope of the network - 120 areas for the protection of wild birds and 234 areas for the protection of natural habitats.

Bats
33 of all 35 bats species in Europe are to be seen in Bulgaria and they are of key importance for the ecosystems. All of them are protected under the Biodiversity Law  and forest and underground habitats of species are protected zones within the Natura 2000 ecological network.
