On the 27th May 2023, Green Balkans, WRBC Green Balkans and friends celebrated the Natura 2000 Day in Muzeiko, in the city of Sofia, where we marked the important ecological date but also gave awards to all organizations, institutions and people, who contributed to us winning of the European Natura 2000 Award for the best PR project (in Communication category) in 2022. The award was given to us last year for the "NATURA 2000 in Bulgaria - New Horizons" Project LIFE17 GIE/BG/371, which was carried out by Green Balkans in partnership with Darik Radio, Economedia and Hobby TV, financed by LIFE programme of the European Union.

'We are glad that we won the award for Bulgaria. This was possible thanks to the contribution of a number of colleagues, museums, educational institutions, donators, journalists, volunteers and friends, who contributed to the popularization of Bulgarian nature conservation.', said Elena Stoeva, Project Manager.

Over 100 people and organizations received honorary diplomas and some of them participated in the event as exhibitors with informational stands, explaining their organizations' activities and distributing informational materials to the public. This made it possible for the hundreds of Muzeiko visitors to learn more about the european ecological network. Amongst the exhibitors were organizations who are members of ForTheNature Coalition.

'This award is really special, and your initiative stood out amongst the others because of its dimensions and because it is a great example of a successful media campaign with huge impact, which is directed towards nature conservation and the role of Natura 2000. A big part of this success is because of the unique partnership between a NGO and three national media channels, which greatly exceeds the typical target audience of communication, that is connected to nature.', shared with us Iva Obretenova, EU Comission representative.

Today, the Natura 2000 ecological network covers more than 27 000 protected areas and is stretching over 18% of the EU’s land area and more than 8% of its marine territory, Natura 2000 is the largest coordinated network of protected areas in the world. It offers a haven to Europe's most valuable and threatened species and habitats.

The Green Balkans team is thankful to everyone who contributed to winning the award with our project!
