The first day began with an introduction to the large-scale activities of the Wildlife Rehabilitation and Breeding Centre. The participants immediately immersed themselves in the core work, taking part in the admission and initial examination of new patients arriving at the intensive care unit. In the afternoon, the participants attended a lecture on first aid and wildlife handling skills.
The second day was dedicated to patient care. In the morning, the young nature lovers once again joined the activities in the intensive care department, whilst the afternoon brought one of the most emotional tasks - veterinary health checks on white storks, which they then had the opportunity to release into the wild.
The third day broadened the focus to less familiar yet vital species. Participants attended a specialized lecture on local reptiles and amphibians, mastering techniques for their safe capture, transport, and handling. Another exciting moment was the release of mallards - raised under the care of the Centre's team. The release took place in partnership with local hunters as part of the LIFE for Falcons project. In the late evening, equipped with wellington boots, the youth set off towards the Bedechka River for a night-time monitoring session of bats and birds.
On the fourth and fifth days, we headed to the Eastern Rhodopes. The young nature lovers enjoyed kayaking and relaxing on the banks of the Arda River near Madzharovo, visited the Eastern Rhodopes Nature Conservation Centre, and explored the ancient Thracian sanctuary Gluhite Kamani. The day ended with a camping experience under the stars.
The final day of the adventure began with a visit to the adaptation aviary and the monitoring of majestic Egyptian vultures in the area. Before heading back to Stara Zagora, the group enjoyed a picturesque walk along the Secret Waterfalls eco-trail.
We returned to the Wildlife Rehabilitation and Breeding Centre tired, but immensely inspired. We believe that the practical experience gained and the shared memories will inspire these young people to actively continue protecting Bulgaria's nature!
