Second edition of the “Wild Chestnut” National Competition for GREEN journalism 2021

Green Balkans and its partners who are working on the “Natura 2000 in Bulgaria – New Horizons” LIFE17 GIE/BG/371 project and the “Bright future for Black Vulture” LIFE14 NAT/BG/649 project, continue with their initiative for nominating the most active journalists with contribution for nature conservation.
The “Wild Chestnut” competition for GREEN journalism aims to reward those journalists with contribution to the coverage of topics about Natura 2000, protected species of European conservation importance, protected areas, threats for the biological biodiversity and the state of environment.

Here are the guidelines for nomination and participation:

Green Balkans gives the start of the ”Wild Chestnut” National competition for GREEN journalism 2021. The competition is implemented within the “Natura 2000 in Bulgaria- New Horizons” and the “Bright Future for the Black Vulture” projects.

Journalists can participate individually with their publications or be nominated by the audience. The nominees should have already published materials (for the period 01.07.2020-01.07.2021) on the topics of nature, Natura 2000, protected species and protected areas in one of the following categories:
•    Print media
•    Radio
•    TV
•    Online Media
•    Blog


! The “Bright Future for Black Vulture” project is due to end in 2021. And because of this, there will be a special award for media covering topics about vulture conservation.

In order journalists to be nominated, it is necessary to cite their article and describe why they deserve to be awarded.
The suggested individuals should meet the following criteria:
 
  • All journalists of contractual relations in any media or freelance can be nominated. About the ”Blog” category - this can be all bloggers, vloggers, social media authors and creators of videos or published content for whom this is a hobby and not a professional occupation.
  • In the last one year (01.07.2020-01.07.2021) the candidates should have published, printed or promoted their own material on topics of nature, Natura 2000, protected species such as the vultures and their habitats in Bulgaria.
  • For each candidate up to 3 publications in each category are allowed.
  • There is no age, gender or seniority limit.

An active form, where everyone can nominate journalists, will be available until 30.06.2021.

All nominees, who are allowed to participate with original author materials, will be evaluated by an expert jury in the respective categories. There are going to be 3 finalists from each category. They will be announced on 19 July (Monday) and the candidates will be judged on:
  • Journalistic mastery and creative approach.
  • Objectivity and reliability of the information sources
  • Scope of natural topics
  • Courage to work on difficult, unpopular or “forbidden” topics
  • Effect/Impact of the journalistic material/s



All 15 finalists will have a unique experience during the ceremony on 7-8 August 2021. On this event all participants will be introduced to the activities surrounding the flagship species in the “Natura 2000 in Bulgaria – New Horizons” project and the “Bright Future for the Black Vulture” project. A direct participation in the conservation activities of Green Balkan awaits all 15 journalists on 7th August in Sliven at “Sinite kamani” Protected Area, part of the Natura 2000 network.

A Certificate of achievement in green journalism will be awarded to all finalists, and the winners (one from each category) will receive the “Wild Chestnut” plaque
The official award ceremony for the winners will be held on 8th August in Sliven.
*Transport, accommodation and food for the period 6-7-8 August of all 15 finalists are provided.
